I recently found a great compilation of Sierra Nevada webcams.
Many of them are not desert, but there are some Sierra east-side ones that qualify in this category -- one's I hadn't known about. Worth checking out.

I found a really great website recently: Don Bain's Virtual Guidebooks.
It has QuickTime VR panoramas of beautiful/cool areas all over the West, including some of my Great Basin favorites.

I spent last weekend around the Black Rock Desert in northwest Nevada. I came upon a Great Basin rattlesnake just north of the west arm of the desert and took a couple of minutes of video of the beautiful creature -- download it from the New Stuff page of Desert Space.

I added a new New Photos page to Desert Space. From a trip between Christmas 2004 and New Years 2005, across Nevada on US Highway 50, "the lonliest road in America" they call it, to far-eastern Nevada and far-western Utah. Then back up through central and northwest NV to eastern Oregon, where I passed into 2005.

I added a new New Photos page to Desert Space. From a July 2004 trip down the east side of the Sierras in California, with photos from the White Mountains along the eastern border of California. Then I drove across Nevada to near the border with Utah and spent a few days in Great Basin National Park in the Snake Range. I hiked to the summit of Wheeler Peak -- 13,063 ft. This was my first trip to a couple of my favorite places in over 5 years.

I added a new New Photos page to Desert Space. From a late-spring 1998 trip around the White/Inyo Mountains area of far-eastern California. I had hoped to drive up the crest of the Whites to the ultra-cool zone I've visited before, but lingering snow from the El Niño winter still blocked that road.

I changed the navigational structure of Desert Space again. After a week of relying solely on frames for intra-site navigation I realized the problem this creates for people who jump to a page of the site from a search engine link. So, frames are mostly gone except for where they're really handy...but the new layout is still different from the 'classic' look of the past several years...better, more functional, I think.

I made a significant change to the navigational structure of Desert Space. In doing so I screwed up some of the code (for reasons unrelated to the structure change), so for a few hours tonight most of the larger photos wouldn't load when the thumbnail was clicked. I think it's fixed -- I was lucky this time to find the error.

Finally (why do I need to use that term so much?), after several years with a website without photos of what is probably my favorite area I now have added to Desert Space a few photos from the Colorado Plateau. This area includes Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Grand Staircase - Escalante NM, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon NP, and many, many square miles of undesignated spectacular coolness. These are not new photos, (in fact many/most of them pre-date my visits to the other deserts), but I'm beginning to do some archeology in my slide stores, and these are a mixed small sample/selection of what I've looked at so far. I have hundreds more...some of which to be added...soon...I claim.

I have added some to my New Photos page. Mostly Oregon high desert, but a couple of miscellaneous Great Basin scenes. The colors in a few of the photos look a little odd -- that's 'cause they were scans of older Kodachrome slides that had been left out in the sunlight too long. I tried to fix them, but didn't quite achieve naturalness.
And the Chihuahuan Desert book with one of my photos as the cover has now been published, last month. See the link a couple of posts below.

I spent the weekend at one of my very favorite places: the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon. It was clear, cold, sunny, beautiful! Hot springs were hot, Pike Creek was cold, views were tremendous...and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, golden eagles, and howling coyotes. Soon I will post a few photos from this trip on my New Photos page.

One of my photographs (the top left one here) was used as the cover of a new (well, re-issued) book about the Chihuahuan Desert called Barren, Wild, and Worthless -- Living in the Chihuahuan Desert, by Susan Tweit, published by University of Arizona Press...to be out in late February, I think, but already available to order from Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Do you know of Ludwig Wittgenstein?
Analytic philosopher of the first half of the 20th century and apparently one of the greatest minds of the century. I've been reading his biography (Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius, by Ray Monk)...incredible thinker. It makes me want to tackle (at least, read) some of his actual philosphophical work.

Hey! I've been looking for a particular slide because someone wants a copy of an image on Desert Space. Well, I haven't found that slide yet, but I have found plenty of others I'd like to show. Mostly Great Basin photos, but also some from my first trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. I've been there 3 times, and I think the first was the best.
Stay tuned, and check New Photos for the updates coming soon.

This satellite view is the best for an aerial view of The West during daylight hours. It's especially good during morning and evening when the low-angle light and shadows highlight the relief of the terrain. When the Sun is high, bodies of water stand out as black. It's visible spectrum, so no night views. Click on a region for a closer look.
